As the World Turns star Elizabeth Hubbard has died. News of the actress' death was announced on her son's Facebook page. The actress died of cancer in new Connecticut home on Saturday at the age of 89.
"I'm sorry to say with a broken heart mi mum passed over the weekend," Hubbard's son Jeremy Bennett wrote. "Thank you for being an unmovable rock that guided me through life. I will try to honour your memory for as long as I live."
Hubbard attended Radcliffe College where she graduated cum laude. After college she continued her education at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London where she became the first American to receive the school's silver medal. Elizabeth studied with Harold Clurman and Lee Strasberg in New York and has studied singing all her life.
Hubbard served on the boards of several international humanitarian charities, including the Women's Commission on Refugee Women and Children.
During her 26 years on As the World Turns, Hubbard earned eight Daytime Emmy nominations for her work as Lucinda Walsh. Though she is best-known for her ATWT role, Hubbard began her daytime career as Dr. Althea Davis on The Doctors. In 1974, Hubbard took home the Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series trophy for her work on The Doctors.
Hubbard earned eight for her turn as Lucinda Walsh on CBS' As the World Turns, a role she played from 1984 until the soap opera aired its final episode in 2010.
In 2015, Hubbard took her talents to the digital soap Anacostia. She was nominated in 2016 for a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Digital Daytime Drama Series for the role.
Martha Byrne (Lily Snyder), who played Hubbard's on-screen daughter for more than 20 years and who shared a real-life friendship with Hubbard for 38 years, took to social media to share her thoughts on Hubbard's passing.
"First and foremost I want everyone to know I made sure she was aware of how much everyone loved her. I would share your comments from social media, videos and your fond memories of her as Lucinda, Althea, every time I saw her. She loved the audience and fought like HELL to bring truth and honesty to her performances," Bryne wrote. "On a personal level there aren't words to describe how much she meant to me. Only feelings, which override words in so many cases when it comes to love."
Byrne added, "I'll miss her every day but grateful the universe gifted me with such a force of nature, of which the world will not see the likes of again."

Actor Alec Baldwin, who played Billy on The Doctors, also took time out to acknowledge Hubbard. "I worked on The Doctors with the great Liz Hubbard," he posted. "An amazing woman and remarkable actress."
The @CBSATWT Twitter account announced there will be a memorial event on Sunday, April 16 at 6:00 p.m. ET on their Twitter account.
