There are certain actors who just ooze what it takes to realistically portray mob characters, and General Hospital's Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) is right up there on the list alongside greats like Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci. Fans have always wanted to see him tackle the part of a mobster outside of Port Charles, and they're about to get their wish.
Benard took to Instagram to reveal that he has landed the role of notorious organized crime boss John Gotti in an upcoming Lifetime film titled The Victoria Gotti Story.
"Thank you lifetime and everyone involved 4 a Beautiful opportunity," the actor wrote along with a photo of his script from the film.
John Gotti, also known as the Dapper Don and the Teflon Don, was an Italian-American gangster who became boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City. At his prime, the mobster was one of the most powerful and dangerous crime bosses in the country. He had a wife named Victoria as well as a daughter named Victoria, and it's unclear at this point which of the two women the Lifetime film will follow.
Gotti's name has been in the media a lot recently due to another film that brings the crime boss's story to the screen. Titled Gotti, the indie flick stars John Travolta; his real-life wife, Kelly Preston; and their real-life daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta. It screened at Cannes earlier this year.
Benard, who recently celebrated his 25th anniversary with GH, has many movies under his belt. His most recent film credits include The Ghost and the Whale, A Lover Betrayed, Hold On, and Nightmare Cinema.
