The holidays are looking good for fans of The Young and the Restless actress Mckenna Grace (Faith Newman) because she has been cast as young Sabrina for the upcoming Christmas special of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
The Netflix series, an adaptation of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch tale, is a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror and the occult. In the reimagined origin story, Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) wrestles to reconcile her dual nature -- half-witch, half-mortal -- while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.
Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told The Wrap that Grace was handpicked for the role of young Sabrina by the series' star herself.
"When Kiernan heard we were doing Li'l Sabrina, she texted me a picture of her with Mckenna and said, 'You have to get Mckenna. She's like me as a little girl and we're dead ringers,'" he reveals. "And then we reached out [to Mckenna] and said, 'Do you want to be Li'l Sabrina for the Christmas special?' And she said yeah. And it was as easy as that! It came from Kiernan though."
The one-off holiday special of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set during the Church of Night's celebration of the winter solstice. On the longest night of the year, families gather around the Yule fire to sing pagan carols and tell ghost stories. But the holidays are also a time for guests and visitors -- both welcome and unwelcome -- so one never knows what might come down the chimney. While the Church of Night celebrates the solstice, young Sabrina heads off to ask Santa for something special.
The holiday episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, titled A Midwinter's Tale, will be available for streaming on Netflix beginning Friday, December 14.
Y&R cast Grace as Faith back in 2013, but she has since gone on to star in major films like Gifted, I, Tonya, and Troupe Zero. She can be seen in the highly anticipated Marvel film Captain Marvel and is currently shooting Annabelle 3. She also costars in Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House.
