Raul Guittierez lived in Genoa City all his life. He came from a large poor family of Cuban descent. Raul and Billy Abbott have been friends since they were in grade school together. They lost touch for several years when Billy moved to New York City with his father John.
Raul and Billy were reunited when Billy moved back to town as a teenager to stay with his mother Jill. Billy Abbott, Brittany Hodges, Mackenzie Browning, J.T. Hellstrom, Rianna Miner, and Raul were friends as they attended Walnut Grove Academy. Straight-A student Raul was only able to attend the expensive private school due to a scholarship. When we first met Rianna, she was dating "bad boy" J.T. exclusively, but he had a roving eye and treated her pretty shabbily. Her best friend the snobby rich girl, Brittany, also had dated J.T. just prior. Snobby rich girl Brittany snagged the Jabot heir Billy Abbott as her boyfriend. Raul developed a crush on Mackenzie Browning, granddaughter of Katherine Chancellor. He was falling in love, but Mac just wanted to be friends. They dated and enjoyed a nice relationship for several months. Raul saved best friend Billy's life when Billy suffered from alcohol poisoning and collapsed in the snow at a party at JT's, as neither Brittany nor JT was willing to call 9-1-1 and get themselves in trouble. Unbeknownst to Raul, Mac and Billy secretly developed feelings for each other. When Mac realized what was happening she broke it off with Raul, who blamed himself for being too forward one evening. When Raul eventually was told about Billy and Mac's secret relationship, he exploded at them for keeping it from him for so long. His friendship with Billy was destroyed.
Billy, Brittany, Raul, and Rianna were chosen as the Glo by Jabot Kids, a summer promotion for the new Jabot teen line. Mac, a runaway afraid that her mother Amanda would find her if she were seen, chose to assist Phyllis Summers running the Glo By Jabot website. Everyone got to witness Raul and Rianna get together, share their first kiss at the Abbotts' poolside, and fall in love live on the website. Slowly, he and Rianna began to realize they had feelings for each other and explored a sweet romance. Their relationship seemed like it would last forever.
For several months, Raul unknowingly had diabetes. Billy and Mac searched out his symptoms on the Internet and arrived at the Abbott pool house just in time to find him in a seizure. This time it was Billy who saved Raul's life. Rianna hovered at his bedside after witnessing the seizures, which nearly took his life in the ER. After his recovery, Rianna was determined to lovingly support him as he came to grips with the diabetes that would forever change his life. Raul learned about his illness and was diligently keeping it under control.
Senior year began, and a holiday series of the Glo By Jabot website added J.T. and Mac, who was feeling safe after being legally adopted by Kay Chancellor, to the Glo Kids. The scene changed to Jabot where a boutique opened, which was run by the kids. Phyllis had taken a job with Brash & Sassy, so new Webmaster Sean Bridges was hired. Raul seemed to be coping with his diabetes, then began acting strange and angry, got careless with his medication, and lapsed into another diabetic coma due to an insulin overdose. Luckily, Rianna was there at Crimson Lights to save him again.
This time following his recovery, Raul tried to break things off with Rianna "for her own good." Rianna convinced him to stay a couple until Raul discovered that she had lost her virginity to J.T. when they were a couple. Raul couldn't handle it, and suddenly demanded sex with her. Rianna was outraged and broke off their relationship. It wasn't long before Rianna resumed dating J.T., convinced that he had become a better person. Meanwhile Raul continued his downward spiral alienating everyone. His brushes with death, his diabetes, his failed relationships, all coupled with the endless expectations placed on him by his family and friends, caused Raul to lash out at everyone and lose interest in maintaining status quo. His grades slipped, and dreams of being the first in his family to attend college fell to the wayside. Raul's older brother Diego breezed into town for a brief visit, then stayed and worked at Crimson Lights, hoping to help his brother through his troubled times. Raul resented Diego for letting down the family by moving away and sticking Raul with the responsibilities instead.
Rianna finally realized that J.T. was using her again and didn't really care about her. Humiliated to be sucked in by JT again, she graduated from high school early at mid-year and left for Spain to become an exchange student. Raul and Rianna shared some touching moments as they said goodbye and both finally admitted how much they truly cared for each other.
Raul and rich girl Brittany became close when she shoplifted a sweater, and tried to convince him to give it to his mom for Christmas. Brittany helped Raul write his less than stellar college entrance paper, which he had put off until the last minute. They ran into each other a lot, and her presence seemed to bring Raul out of his despondency. They began attending concerts and movies together and hung out at Crimson Lights as friends, never admitting their growing feelings for each other. Brittany won the lead in the school play "Much Ado About Nothing," with Raul's encouragement. While practicing lines backstage together, their hints of romance finally came true with a passionate kiss. When J.T., the male lead, didn't show up opening night, Raul stepped in and the play was a big success. When her parents didn't show up for the play, we began to see a vulnerable side to Britt. All the shenanigans the self-confident, gorgeous blonde had pulled had been covering up a girl who felt unloved and unworthy of someone who would want her for more than her body.
Just as Raul and Brittany had begun to get close, Brittany succumbed to the fear of being loved and not in control and suddenly dumped him. She began dating J.T. again and flaunted him in front of Raul, trying to hurt him. Rianna returned to Genoa City just in time to be Raul's date for the prom, which helped Raul finally get Britt to admit that she cared. Raul and Britt left the prom together for a rendezvous at a campsite where they made love, Raul for the first time in his life, Britt for the first time she ever really cared.
After many disappointments, Raul was accepted to Pemberton College in Boston and won a scholarship. Brittany was bound for another college in New York. But a serious car accident caused by Brittany driving them while drunk changed all that. Brittany walked away with minor injuries, but was arrested for drunk driving. Raul received a spinal injury, which left him paralyzed for months. He blamed Brittany and told her to go on to college and leave him alone, but she refused to leave Genoa City. Brittany ended up with probation and community service, and Raul eventually was up and shuffling down the road to recovery. He forgave her over time, and they resumed their relationship. Britt's parents did not approve, so Anita cut off Brittany's money and credit. So Britt left home, and she and Raul found a cheap apartment to live together until January when they both planned to go on to college. After being burglarized of what little they had, weeks later two thugs broke in and held Brittany against her will, and she was rescued by Raul and Billy. Both Raul and Brittany moved home to their families. They decided to turn down Raul's scholarship to Pemberton University and attend GCU while working part time at the Glow By Jabot Boutique. They moved into a loft apartment shared with Mac and Billy. By spring, Billy had proposed and Mac and Billy were to be married with Raul as best man and Colleen Carlton as maid of honor. But with the reveal that Billy's mother Jill's actual birth mother was Katherine Chancellor, their lives were shattered when they realized they were cousins. Mac and Billy both left town on their own, devastated by the news. Strapped for cash, Raul and Brittany then agreed to let J.T. rent Mac's room in the loft.
Brittany, bored with school and her job at the Boutique, and always dreaming of the spotlight, was enticed by Bobby Marsino to sing at his club. She was shocked to discover it was a "Gentleman's Club" but Bobby assured her she didn't have to strip to sing on stage. Britt took him up on the offer and became a torch singer going by the name Marilyn. Halfway through her first song, the crowd started cheering for her to strip, and she reluctantly did. The tips were fabulous, at around $1000 a night, and she loved the attention, so she kept it up, buying the costumes and working out elaborate acts. Of course it wasn't long before J.T. followed her to work and discovered her secret, then Raul found out, sat in the audience, then rushed the stage, covering her and dragging her off. Raul was aghast and demanded she choose him or the job. Britt chose her new career, never really believing Raul wouldn't accept it eventually.
But Raul moved into Mac's room and broke it off. Brittany's father took some out-of-town-clients to the club at their behest, discovered his daughter and, unbeknownst to Britt, was thrown out of the club when he made a scene. Sleazy club owner, Bobby, fell for Britt, who was very vulnerable at this point with everyone she loved being against her new life. Giving up on convincing Brittany to quit, Fredrick pulled a setup with Raul to get caught drinking at the club to shut it down. Marsino's opened again, but Britt was hesitant to return, so Bobby promised to hook her up with someone who could help her singing career. Meanwhile Bobby's boss, Sal Staley, and Sal's boss were looking for revenge on her father, Fredrick, for getting the club in trouble with the law. Sal approached Bobby's partner, Angelo, who apparently used to be a hit man in the mob, to help. Worried about Brittany, Raul went to work at Marsino's as a temporary bookkeeper to keep an eye on her. Not long afterward, Brittany was electrocuted by the stripper pole during her act and severely burned the entire right side of her face. Bobby and Raul stayed at her side throughout her recovery, but she was told she would be scarred for life.
Brittany finally gave in to Bobby, told him she loved him too, and they became lovers. Bobby proposed, and they were engaged. Britt's friends disapproved, and she didn't dared tell her parents. Meanwhile, the steadfast Raul found Britt a plastic surgeon to restore her burned face, she had the surgery, and was awaiting the results. But Raul had seen the writing on the wall, bid everyone farewell, and left for Boston and his scholarship to Pemberton College.
On Memorial Day 2009, shortly after Mackenzie returned to Genoa City to welcome her grandmother Katherine Chancellor back from being presumed dead, Raul surprised everyone when he walked in on the annual barbeque at the Chancellor mansion. After reuniting with Billy, and being introduced to Kay's new husband Murphy and Billy's new wife Chloe, Mac walked in and they embraced and passionately kissed. Mac had earlier revealed that there was someone she worked with in Darfur, Africa, and their year long relationship was "serious, but didn't work out" - and it turned out to be Raul. After Billy reluctantly gave them his blessing, Raul asked Mac to marry him and return to Washington DC with him, and she said yes.
But the more time Mac spent with Billy, the more she doubted her future with Raul. Chloe saw this coming and got Raul to return from D.C., but it was only for Mac to tell him she was sorry, but the engagement was off.
In March of 2018 Raul returned to Genoa City, bearded and distinguished, for the Walnut Grove Centennial Reunion. On his arm was the forever young and sexy Brittany, who was now a partner in a law firm. They had gotten together after Raul's breakup with Mac, and were married a year later. Raul had transferred from Washington D.C. to New York City, and became an Agency Director for the same disaster relief organization. Raul had adopted Brittany's son by Bobby Marcino, Joshua, who was a freshman at Harvard. Both were surprised to see their old pal Billy Abbott in a relationship with former pal Daniel's mother Phyllis Summers. Back together again, Victoria and J.T. also attended, as well as J.T.'s soon to be ex-wife, Mackenzie.
