This year's Supporting Actor nominees were all performers who had taken home Emmys before. Two nominees, Days of our Lives' Wally Kurth and The Bay's Mike Manning, were previously honored for their work behind the camera rather than in front of it.
This year, Robert Gossett earned his second consecutive Daytime Emmy win as General Hospital's Marshall Ashford. It was his third nomination. The actor received a nod in 2022 in the Outstanding Guest Performer category and won in 2023 for Supporting Actor for playing Marshall, a character he originated in 2021.
Gossett's win comes with a little bit of history. He became just the fourth actor in Daytime Emmy history -- and the second from GH -- to win back-to-back Emmys in the category. Guiding Light's Jerry ver Dorn (Ross Marler), Santa Barbara's Justin Deas (Keith Timmons), and GH's Jonathan Jackson (Lucky Spencer) also accomplished the feat.
In 2023, Gossett's Marshall mourned the death of Epiphany Johnson, a woman he was falling in love with. He also learned that he was misdiagnosed decades ago when he was told he had schizophrenia. Marshall had to come to terms with that truth and all the years he chose to miss with his family because he was a danger to them.
In his acceptance speech, Gossett thanked his GH family for their support.
"This is so humbling," Gossett said. "I thank you all. Dana Walden, Disney, ABC, of course, the viewers who tune in faithfully every day. Frank Valentini, I love you man. The cast, the complete cast and crew of General Hospital. And my Ashford family. Brook and Vernee and Tajh, and Donnell. I couldn't do it without them.
I love you all. This is so humbling. I thank you all. Dana Walden, Disney, ABC, of course, the viewers who tune in faithfully every day. Frank Valentini, I love you man. The cast, the complete cast and crew of General Hospital. And my Ashford family. Brook [Kerr, Portia Robinson] and Vernee [Watson, Stella Henry] and Tajh [Bellow, T.J. Ashford], and Donnell [Turner, Curtis Ashford]. I couldn't do it without them."
Ashford also expressed his gratitude to his loved ones, including his late son, Luke, who died in 2023.
"Carmen and Michele and Danielle, and Caleb and Luke," he said. "I love you all. Thank you once again. And to the academy -- to do this for our peers. I am so honored, and I thank you all. God bless."
General Hospital actors have won in this category a whopping 16 times since the category was introduced in 1979.
This year's crop of Supporting Actress nominees were all performers who had never won the award before. And for one actress -- The Young and the Restless' Allison Lanier (Summer Newman) -- this year marked her first-ever nomination. Another actress was previously nominated for her role but on a totally different soap.
Courtney Hope became a first-time winner after two nominations for playing Sally Spectra. Her first Supporting Actress nod came in 2019 when she was bringing Sally to life on The Bold and the Beautiful. Hope moved the character from Los Angeles to The Young and the Restless' Genoa City in 2020.
Hope's Sally experienced one of the most difficult things a woman can go through in 2023, the loss of her child. Sally was forced to have a premature C-section, and her daughter didn't make it. Hope submitted the scenes in which Sally learns her baby is gone, touching hearts as she experiences intense grief.
When Hope accepted her award, she thanked the people she works with at Y&R, as well as her family.
"I did not get here alone. God, NATAS, Sony, everyone at CBS, my entire Young and the Restless family. Josh Griffith, thank you so much for trusting me with this story. My powerhouse partners Josh and Mark. My family, my parents, my best friends, my younger brother Jamie, my ride or die, I love you."
Hope also harkened to her character's story as she dedicated her Emmy.
"I really want to dedicate this to anyone who's ever lost a child in whatever capacity," she said before adding, "To every child who has passed on from this human experience, I pray that you continue to bring peace and healing to your families, your loved ones who will always keep a light on in their heart for you. Thank you so, so much. I am inspired by you all."
