After complaining about not having any romance in Springfield, this week we were rewarded with a romantic wedding of two star-crossed lovers. And whether you were a fan of the couple or not, you had to appreciate all that they have had to overcome to be together. And the wedding itself was simple and lovely (even if Reva was written to be absent - which is pretty odd).
But then, anyone who reads this column or picks up a magazine, knows that the love-fest won't last (on air at least). The ink isn't even dry on the marriage license (which I assume they did get in their haste) and already trouble has struck this young couple. When the dust settles, nearly everyone in Springfield will be affected by the results of just one phone call...
In some ways, this reminds me of the wedding of Mallet and Harley, who left for Florida right after the ceremony. (oh, and thanks to CBS and GL for not telling us Mark Derwin, ex-Mallet was on CBS' "NCIS" this week) when Beth Ehlers and Mark left the show. The couple gets the fairly tale wedding before they exit the show. But that is where the similarities end. I'm not "spoiling" anyone, but this story ends a little differently - and less happily.
Fans get one more week of Jon and Tammy to savor, and detractors have little to watch if they are uninterested. Since you rarely saw any other characters this week. While I think that's pure genius if everyone loves the story, it's potential show suicide if you don't have all of your fans loving the story.
But fans of GL, yes even those of you who write you no longer watch, PLEASE WATCH THURSDAY!! Thursday is the 70th anniversary of the show (and that is no typo) and the show will look back at the history of the show we all love. I haven't seen the episode, of course, but can't wait to see what is in store.
Keep the Light Shining and Happy 70th Anniversary GL!
